| USAID To Hold Training Program On Electricity Markets in Kathmandu, Nepal; Dhaka, Bangladesh; and Betota, Srilanka | |
The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), in cooperation with the Energy Market Group, U.S., is organizing a three-day training program on `Electricity Markets’ for the South Asia Region. The training program is designed to address such issues as competition, market power, transparency and governance. Customized for electricity sector workers from different regions of South Asia, the training program will also take up issues related to wholesale electricity trading, connecting market prices and power procurement costs with end-user tariffs, essential elements to efficient electricity market structure and design in the South Asian Region. The training program will help participants develop an understanding of the basic concepts related to electricity market design.
The specific training components will include pricing and contracts, energy and reserve markets, creation of enabling environments for investments in generation, trading, system operation, coordination of a multi-participant sector etc. Experts from India have also been invited to present an overview of the Indian Electricity Market during the last day of training at Katmandu and Colombo.
USAID’s SARI/Energy program is sponsoring the training. The primary objective of the SARI/Energy program is to promote energy security in South Asia through three key activities areas: cross border energy trade, energy market formation, and regional clean energy development. The program facilitates more efficient regional energy resource utilization, works towards transparent and profitable energy practices, mitigates the environmental impacts of energy production, and increases regional access to energy.
For Nepal and Bhutan, the training program is being organized at Hyatt Regency, Katmandu from August 5-8, 2008. For participants from Bangladesh and Afghanistan, it will be held at Dhaka Sheraton Hotel from August 12 -14, 2008. For Sri Lanka and Maldives, the training program is scheduled at Bentota Beach Hotel, Bentota from August 18-20, 2008.
