International India and the Institute for International Education are working together to implement the USAID-sponsored South Asia Regional Initiative for Energy Cooperation and Development (SARI/Energy) Small Grants Program. The SARI/Energy Small Grants Program consists of two focus areas:

Institutional capacity building grants to SARI/Energy Training Institution Partners (TIPs) |
|
Cooperative research and outreach grants to local organizations |
Under this
program, four requests for proposals were
issued in 2003 and 2004 seeking proposals
for projects that encourage regional cooperation
in South Asia on issues of mutual regional
concern in the energy sector. Grants were
awarded on a competitive basis to several
organizations to implement initiatives that
foster cooperative energy research and outreach.

included Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, the
Maldives, Nepal and Sri Lanka. The Small
Grants program has now been extended to
Pakistan and Afghanistan and an RFP has
been issued in April 2005. |

feasibility studies
for trans-national electricity exchange; |

privatization, regulatory
reform and restructuring of the energy sector
to promote the development of competitive
markets; |

improved management
of utilities and energy sector institutions,
including financial management; |

energy pricing and tariffs; |
|
improved access to and
quality of rural energy; |
|
energy efficiency and
conservation; |
|
increased civil participation
and awareness of energy issues; |
|
environmental
impacts of resource development and energy
use. |
