Course Overview : Case Development And Case Based Training
WORKSHOP INTRODUCTION:
The South Asia Regional Initiative for Energy Cooperation and Development (SARI/Energy) program was launched in 2000 to build mutually beneficial energy linkages among the countries of South Asia. Since its inception, the SARI/Energy project has made significant contributions to addressing energy sector issues, including; exposing more than 3,500 participants to TA and Training; disseminating good practices to improving regional energy institutions; supporting harmonization of energy efficiency standards; exploring opportunities for private sector participation in energy sector projects; and undertaking numerous outreach and dissemination activities.
A number of projects and activities are currently taking place in South Asia under the SARI/E Program, and an emerging body of new knowledge and experience in SARI/E focus areas is accumulating. This knowledge can be harnessed as a very valuable learning opportunity and/or tool if it is captured and documented in the form of case studies and disseminated through training courses by Training Institution Partners (TIPs) and Rural Energy Training Network (RETNs).
Some of the areas in which TIPs /other institutions have been working include electricity reforms and restructuring; improving access and service delivery of rural electrification; energy efficiency standards and labeling; energy security and regional energy cooperation. Besides this, there are selected SARI Small Grants Grantees who have carried out research embodied in the case materials.
This Workshop is envisaged as an attempt to capture, organize and share – in the form of case studies – some recent experiences within the Region, in SARI/E focus areas.
WORKSHOP OBJECTIVES:
The workshop on case development, Enhancing Institutional Capacity for Developing and Using Case Studies in the Region, aims to strengthen the capacity of TIPs, RETNs and other SARI/E participants so that they can play a larger role in knowledge creation and transfer in the Region in their respective focus area /theme. The course is designed to encourage the development of locally or regionally relevant case studies that are well integrated into the teaching agenda and curriculum.
The other objectives of the course are – increase in networking within TIPs and other institutions and also to create a network for peer review of cases.
It is envisaged that at the end of the course, a compendium of Regional case studies would be created and published, that will encourage use and dissemination of cases.
WORKSHOP TOPICS AND METHODOLOGIES
The focus of the Workshop is on a hands-on training to the participants on developing case studies and using them as training material. There will be two broad components of the course: Development of skills in writing case studies, and skills in using case studies as a pedagogy in training courses. The Workshop Profile is as follows:
Introduction to case research and case method of teaching
Case writing: the dos and don’ts
Teaching through cases
Presentation and discussion of case ideas brought by participants; and sharing of experiences
Wrap-up sessions: plan for further work
It is envisaged that the participants from TIPs, RETNs and other organizations will bring along with them suitable case leads and back-up material (on their areas of focus/strengths) which they would use to develop during the training. Alternately, they could bring with them a case recently developed by them, which could be re-worked/ refined and pilot tested during the Workshop. Some of the case studies developed will be pilot tested during the course of the workshop.
TARGET PARTICIPANTS:
The course is primarily aimed at senior-mid level faculty/professionals of the SARI/E partner Institutions/organizations (TIPs/RETN/SARI Small Grantees). Limited seats are available for participants representing other stakeholder categories like utility partners of these above organizations.
Training Course materials are available on CD- ROM upon request to the
Resource Center.
